Skeleton Cop (2019)- Absolutely Ridiculous and Strange In the Best Possible Ways- Fitz of Horror Review

Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) March 3, 2019

SynopsisSkeleton Cop has a bone to pick with crime. The loose cannon cop gets partnered with a by the books detective. Can this odd paring overcome their differences in time? Or will the Evil Ninja gang take over the city? Justice has a new crusader, Skeleton Cop.

Man, I don’t even know where to start with this one. One thing I do know for sure is that Skeleton Cop writer/director Chad Knauer has to be certifiably insane and this beautiful insanity is the driving force behind one of the best, weirdest, goriest and over the top short horror movies I’ve ever seen.

Skeleton Cop begins with our anti-hero responding to a break-in call where a female perp is in the middle of her dirty work, this is where we see that this movie doesn’t give a shit what anyone thinks. Skeleton Cop busts in the house and promptly kills the woman in glorious “overkill” fashion by shooting her about 20 times over the course of what seemed like 20-30 seconds. Each shot making blood spray from the victim and the director doesn’t even try to hide the fishing line used to magically bring Skeleton Cop to life. This just adds a certain demented charm to the movie.

Clearly, Skeleton Cop is a loose cannon of a police officer so he is partnered with a “by the book” no-nonsense cop to help keep him in line. This is when our true villains of the film are revealed, a gang of misfit ninjas hell-bent on overthrowing the city by means of violence and movie and music copyright infringement. After a run in with the ninjas, Skeleton Cop saves his reluctant partners life resulting in a newfound bond that makes them an unstoppable crime-fighting team- Enter the cheesy music montage.

After an unfortunate event, Skeleton Cop goes on a vendetta-fueled and gore-drenched ninja killing spree with kills that will have you rolling with laughter, rubbing your eyes in disbelief, checking to see if your drink or smoke were laced and staring at the screen in awe and disbelief in what you are witnessing. By that time, the credits are rolling on this madcap 32-minute film and I highly suggest that you keep watching because the laughs keep coming.

Skeleton Cop seemingly takes place in a TROMA-esque universe where the heroes are as bat shit crazy as the over the top villains and even lowly litterbugs are willing to kill cops. This movie is a highly original and very strange breath of fresh air for those that like their horror with copious amounts of gore, humor and straight-up weirdness.
