Horror Movies to Get You Ready for the Apocalypse…….I Mean The Eclipse–Fitz of Horror

With my area in Oregon being in the proverbial “Path of Totality”,  all of the craziness leading up to this total solar eclipse on Monday August 21st, such as gas stations running out of gas, grocery stores running out of necessities (and food), streets and freeways gridlocked with out of towners and everyone buying and wearing those stupid fucking eclipse glasses, it’s hard not compare the feeling of impending doom and uncertainty to that of apocalyptic horror movies.

Everywhere you turn right now whether it be news channels, radio stations, grocery stores, liquor stores, the internet or casual conversation with a stranger, everything is about this damn eclipse and how people are going to spend the 2 minutes in the dark.  Part of me enjoys it though because EVERYONE is feeling uneasy and uncertain about what to do or what may happen—-That my friends is the feeling of terror the root of horror!

Here is a short list of worthy apocalyptic horror/sci fi to watch leading up to this global phenomenon

NIGHT OF THE COMET.

Probably my favorite (and most fun) apocalypse themed horror movie that starts with the world excited for the passing of a comet (while wearing stupid fucking comet glasses) becomes victim to the unexpected tail of the comet which either turns you to dust in your clothes, a blood thirsty zombie or you’re just magically unaffected.

 

 

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE

Another guilty pleasure and a clear second option as to what may transpire on August 21st, is the possibility of this event triggering the machines of the world to turn against us and try to take over the world.

 

HALLOWEEN 3: SEASON OF THE WITCH

Hear me out on this one. I am comparing the Silver Shamrock masks in this movie to the stupid fucking eclipse glasses being sold everywhere to everyone. What better chance to manipulate a population than to exploit their desire to do what they are told is the best way to view something….

It doesn’t end well

 

 

THE PURGE TRILOGY

Because who knows what is going to happen for those 2 minutes of complete darkness during the day?!?!?!

THE MIST

Everyone knows its coming but before they can fully prepare (gas, groceries, etc) it’s too late. This movie captures the “what in the hell would I do in this situation” feeling perfectly……….And that ending though.

 

THE UNDEAD

This movie is a trip and just has to be seen. I can’t say anything without giving too much away but this one will get you ready for sure!

 

THE CRAZIES

When a normal day takes a very nasty turn and all of the sudden you are faced with the decision to kill those you know that have been infected with a mysterious virus, or be killed by said crazy people. This one also has a great ending.

 

THE DAY AFTER

This is a man made disaster movie but its damn scary to thing something could just come out of the sky and take us out in a flash.

 

WAR OF THE WORLDS

Again, everybody is helpless together, scary stuff, and who’s to say that aliens don’t have anything to do with this eclipse???

 

DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978)

Prehaps no movie (horror or otherwise) captures the dread and all out helplessness of a global epedemic than this movie and it still holds up to this day.
