Circus of the Dead (2015)- A New Reason to Fear Clowns! Easily One of the Best Clown Horror Movies Ever Made!-Fitz of Horror Review

Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) January 17, 2018

SynopsisFamily man Don’s visit to an old, run down Big Top circus and chance encounter with a nihilistic group of clowns leaves him fighting for his life and the lives of those he loves. As Don becomes drawn deeper into lead clown Papa Corn’s games, he comes closer to the edge of reason and sanity. Armed with guns, knives and a ’68 Camaro, the clowns lead Don on an all night crime spree through oil soaked West Texas. Papa Corn’s wild ride brings blood, gore and mayhem to all he encounters.

If you think clowns scare you now, just wait until you get a load of Circus of the Dead!

Director Billy “Bloody Bill” Pon worked for years to finally get his masterpiece of mayhem to the masses and let me tell you, the wait was well worth it.

“A man becomes entangled in a deadly morality game when the circus comes to town and a sadistic clown forces him to examine the things in life he takes for granted in the most horrific ways.”

The movie starts with a bang, introducing us to the maniacs disguised as clowns and what they are capable of in a most gory fashion. Then we cut to Donald (played perfectly by Parrish Randall) and his family who are clearly having issues but decide to have quality family time by going to the damn circus…..This proves to be a big mistake.

From there we get to bear witness to some of the most brutal and sadistic clowns ever put on film. These guys are absolute psychopaths and live for nothing but to carry out the evil deeds of Papa Corn’s Mexican bingo cards.

Now I admit, the acting isn’t the greatest in the first 10 minutes of the film but the last 95 minutes are near indie horror perfection. Papa Corn, played brilliantly by veteran actor Bill Oberst jr, in what is sure to be a star turning role, turns in a performance that should go down as one of the greatest villains in horror history. His utterly mesmerizing presence brings out the best in all that share the screen with him and elevates this film from low budget indie movie to must watch riveting horror.

This film gives new meaning to the term “Insane clown posse” with great performances by Ryan Clapp (Noodledome), Rusty Edwards (Mister Blister) and Mike Williams (Jumbo the Clown), each clown has his own sadistic element that adds to the chaos of their traveling circus rampage.

There are scenes in this movie that made me stand up off my couch and yell profanities of pure psychotic joy at what I was witnessing! As a horror fan, just when you feel like you have seen it all, a movie comes along and pushes the boundaries of violence and gore, Circus of the Dead is that movie.

After watching this film multiple times, I am still in awe of how Billy Pon was able get the absolute best out of his actors and I can safely say that I am now a fan of his for life and am looking forward to seeing whatever madness he puts on the screen next!
