The Indie Horror Fans Have Spoken and Amazon Listened-Cherokee Creek is Now Available on the Streaming Giant-Fitz of Horror
Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) January 27, 2019
After a month long battle to get Cherokee Creek on Amazon, Director Todd Jenkins can finally breath easy now knowing his film will now be available for possibly millions to see. This crazy journey started when Jenkins signed with indie distributor label Distribber to have his film released on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Vudu and Fandango Now and was promised that on December 25, 2018 Cherokee Creek would be available across all formats simultainiously. When the big day came 2 prominent sites, Amazon and Fandango Now, had deemed Cherokee Creek “too offensive” for their sites and before the film even had a chance to offend anyone it was pulled from rotation.
Cherokee Creek just seemed to be the first of many indie horror films that was going to get the axe from Amazon though as hundreds of indie films were removed from Amazon over the next few weeks. The indie horror community wasn’t having it though and began to speak out. Several directors, producers and actors were taking to social media via written posts, videos articles and blogs to lash out at the streaming giant for picking on the little guys and removing their films for no reason. Amazon seemed to be listening.
On January 25th (one month to the day of it’s original release date) Jenkins was notified that Cherokee Creek was now available for streaming on their site. Yes it was only a month but after speaking with Jenkins it was one of the most stressfull and trying months of his life. Like many other indie filmmakers out there that were affected by Amazons “indie purge”, these people put their own money and time into these films and they are lobors of love and overall taxing effort and for them to get an opportunity to have their work potentially seen by hundreds, thousands or millions of people is a great feeling and something that can help their careers moving forward.
I am hoping that Amazon reversing their decision to ban Cherokee Creek and making it available on their site is a turning point for the indie market. We as indie horror fans need to remain vocal about what we want. It definitely worked this time and who knows, maybe they will just cave and give us a section dedicated to all sorts of offensive indie horror that WE can decide if we want to watch or not.
As much as people hate Amazon for doing this recent purge, we still need to keep fighting for new and future indie horror titles to be released on their site because like it or not they are THE biggest platform for indie filmmakers to get their films seen and possibly make some money while they’re at it.
Cherokee Creek is availble to rent or purchase (digitally) starting at just $3.99. Order HERE
