TERATOMORPH (2019)-Joe Meredith’s superb follow up to his sci-fi/horror gem South Mill District- Fitz of Horror Review

Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) January 10, 2019

Synopsis-The lethal alien virus known as ‘Havoc’ has spread beyond the South Mill District, and into the rural outreaches. An infected boy wanders the ravaged region, finding necrotic remains and mutant creatures along the way, as the Havoc virus begins to evolve to the next level of alien horror in this sequel to 2018’s ‘South Mill District.

Teratomorph is the follow-up film to last years apocalyptic sci-fi alien hit South Mill District (My review HERE). As with the first film, creator/director Joe Meredith creates a very convincing world full of dread, intrigue, and aliens that will kill you in horrific and very gory ways.

As the film opens we are dropped into the same barren world that we left off within South Mill District but this time the focal point is a young boy (played superbly by Elijah Meredith) who is seen sitting alone by a lakeshore using a stick to casually poke at a grotesque head and torso floating in the water. Soon we learn that there has been a second “Havoc” virus outbreak and Eon Corp is behind the ghastly experiments that are turning human subjects into alien Teratomorphs.

Before long we see that the young boy, “Subject X”,  has contracted the nasty virus and is actively changing. With a gnarly scene of Subject X graphically removing his hand to try to stop the virus from spreading he learns that he has only painfully stalled the inevitable process.

The bulk of the 33-minute film is spent retracing the boy’s steps so we can learn what made him this way. Living alone and infected he tries to hang on to his youthful innocence but this new and monster-ridden violent world have drastically different plans for him.

With amazing practical FX created (again) by the masterful James Bell and an ominous and eerie score, Joe Meredith has again successfully created a highly unique alternate universe/world. Teratomorph, as well as South Mill District, are straight up sci-fi/horror films with highly engrossing and distinctive stories that leave you wanting more despite the desolate and gloomy locations.

With great, if not brief performances by mom and dad, Cidney and Joe Meredith, and an unrecognizable yet memorable performance by indie artist extrordinaire Martin Trafford, young Elijah steals the show with his amazing performance as the infected and quickly changing Subject X.
