Halloween (2018)-It’s not perfect but it was fun and brutal as hell!-Fitz of Horror Review

Synopsis-Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
As far as sequels go Halloween is a damn good one. Completely doing away with previous sequels this stands as a direct sequel to the original but drops sever Easter egg shout outs to the previous films.
This movie has definite flaws but one must remember that at its core it is, in fact, a slasher movie so you have to suspend disbelief and just go with the flow. Given Laurie’s 40 year prep time waiting for Michael’s imminent return, things should have probably ended pretty quickly but that’s not how slasher movies work. Slasher movies make you yell at the screen and plead with the characters to “do this” or “Don’t do that!, but by god they do it anyway and you are just left to watch them do what you know they shouldn’t. Halloween is this kind of movie to a T and it isn’t ashamed of it.
The writing was done well enough that the characters weren’t annoying and you were actually shocked at how violently Michael dispatches of them. The kills are definitely some of the best of the franchise and the viciousness in which they come is somewhat jarring at first, but that’s how I like it!
I feel like Halloween 2018 is the love child of Rob Zombie’s Halloween and John Carpenter’s Halloween. It had the creepy elements and music of the 1978 Halloween but the violence and dialogue of the 2007 Halloween. These two styles were blended perfectly into a very rewatchable new entry into the classic franchise.
The one main thing I am taking from the success of Halloween is that flawed or not, the triumphant return of Michael Myers just opened the door for future Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and other iconic slashers to be brought to the big screen. This movie is ultimately nostalgic and is paving the way for new releases of the old franchises we love. Enough with this straight to video shit for Pinhead, Chucky and Leatherface.
My advice to you is to go see this in the theater. It shows Hollywood that horror is alive and kicking and that horror fans will pay to see their beloved anti heroes on the big screen again. IT opened the door for horror but Halloween opened the door for slashers and if you think IT and Halloween had big opening weekends just wait until they announce that a new Friday the 13th is coming.
