Ahockalypse (2018)-The Slap Shot of Zombie Hockey Movies- Fitz of Horror Review
Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) August 27, 2018
Synopsis- The Prairie Kings Hockey team battle for the championship and their lives all in one night. The boys win the cup only to find out that a Zombie Ahockalypse has happened. The boys battle their way to their home arena for a final showdown. Can Barry Melrose help the guys escape with their lives or is it sudden death for Jonesy and the boys?
First of all I am huge fan of zombie movies and also a pretty big hockey fan so when I heard that there was a movie that mixed them both, I was beyond ecstatic. Then I discovered that former NHL player and current ESPN analyst Barry Melrose was in it so I had to track it down!
The movie starts fast and never really lets up. As The Prairie Kings are playing for the cup there are strange things happening all over the city but after their victory all they care about is getting back to the hotel so they can celebrate in the most irresponsible ways possible. As the celebration exits the hotel, the team discovers that a zombie apocalypse is taking place and they are gonna have to fight to stay alive.
The self aware humor in this film reminds me of a Dude Bro Party Massacre III or Zombieland whereas the characters are seemingly blissfully unaware of the actual danger they are in yet somehow make it through. The main characters, even Jonsey (Jesse Rennicke) are hilariously inept at handling their current situations but this just adds to the fun and insanity of this movie.
As the team tries to make its way back across town to the hockey arena they run into all sorts of colorful characters and hordes of the undead. To top off Jonsey’s current situation he finds himself stuck in an awkward love triangle between his crush and his controlling and clearly insane girlfriend but this also adds an unexpected and very comical layer to the already outlandish script.
Their multiple encounters with the zombies makes the pace of Ahockalypse quite fast and very enjoyable and although 95% of the blood splatter from zombie kills is CGI, the zombies themselves were actually quite good and the creativity of some of the kills were top notch so it is forgivable in this case plus one of the end kills was insane and all practical FX.
One of the most WTF parts of this movie was the apparent martial arts expert team mascot traveling across town with his two Asian cheerleader sidekicks opening wholesale cans of whoop ass on all of the zombies that crossed their path. Truly insane and a genius touch to the overall irreverent nature of this movie.
Being a sports related horror movie, the final showdown had the feeling of an underdog story like Rocky or Rudy where our protagonists face overwhelming odds in a fight for their lives……OK, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration but the ending is pretty fucking epic!
If you’re looking for a fun movie to watch by yourself or with some friends, Ahockolypse is it! If you’re looking for a unique and gory horror movie, Ahockolypse is it! If you’re looking for an original zombie movie in a sea of “been there done that” zombie movies, Ahockalypse is it!!
