Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories (2016) is a sequel to Volumes of Blood (2015) and is a horror anthology that is more like a monument to modern indie horror. It boasts some of the best indie directors in the game, a producer in P.J. Starks that has quickly become a name that is synonymous with great independent horror and so many indie horror references and shout outs that it begs for multiple viewing and drinking games made in it’s honor. It is also a holiday-centric horror movie with each segment relating to a different holiday.
Synopsis– This critically acclaimed anthology sees a young couple planning to purchase an old home, but would like one last tour before the closing. They’re guided around the estate by a realtor that may have more in store than they bargained for. Searching floor by floor, they begin to discover seven tales of terror, that will leave you asking…How many stories does your home have?

The movie breaks down into 7 segments including the wraparound(s).
“Murder, Death, Killer” (Nathan Thomas Milliner)- Knowing what the plot of the film was I thought I was watching the wrong movie at first. A few small time crooks meet up with a mafioso looking guy to loot a warehouse but when night falls they learn of the tale of Atticus Crow and soon realize they might not make it out alive. To my surprise, this solid slasher segment was a clever lead in to the actual lead in, which was chock full of indie horror references and visuals.
“Trick or Treat” (Sean Blevins)- This is obviously set on Halloween and has multiple but effective layers and puts a new twist on the innocent “trick or treat” phrase. The Bloodbath and Beyond crew show up as news anchors in this segment and the kills will make you cringe for sure, all leading to a great set up for the rest of the story.
“Feeding Time” (John William Holt)- This one takes place on Thanksgiving and is definitely a twisted little treat. Anchored by a great story and solid acting, this segment is a testament to sisterly love and a warning that if someone says they have a monster in their closet you should probably believe them.
“Blood Bath” (John Maynard)- Set on Fathers Day, a surprising killer in this seemingly haunted house is hungry for victims. There is no shortage of blood in this segment and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a killer quite like this.
“Fear, For Sinners Here” (Nathan Thomas Milliner)- Taking place on Christmas Eve, this segment has a bit of a slower pace and longer running time compared to the rest of the segments but I would have to say that it is probably my favorite because of that. There is a lot of time focused on a mother wrapping presents for her children but she just seems “out of it”, soon there are carolers singing at the front door but one of them isn’t there to just spread Christmas cheer and the reason why she was there was a reason, that I’m surprised, hasn’t been covered before in a Christmas related film. Featuring a great story and even greater twist this tale of Yuletide fear deserves multiple watches.
Director Nathan Thomas Milliner is also the director of the cult hit fan film, “The Confession of Fred Krueger” and cover artist for several Scream Factory Collectors Edition releases (Halloween 2 & 3, Deadly Blessing and more).
“The Deathday Party“(Justin Seaman)-Featuring a husband and wife who have a very unique relationship and hobby, it is the hemorrhoid ridden husband’s birthday and his wife has gotten him a very special surprise gift. This “gift” creates some serious cringe inducing moments that you won’t soon forget. This segment was equally demented as it was hilarious and not for the faint of heart.
“A Killer House” (James Treakle)- In what is one of the most engrossing and original wrap around stories I have ever seen in an anthology. It’s New Years Day and an ominous and very large real estate agent walks a couple through their potential dream home but room by room and tale by bloody tale, they soon realize this that this house has too many “stories” for them but it may be too late for them to leave!
As with every anthology some stories are better than others and VOBHS is no different but as a whole, this is a fun and very worthwhile horror anthology and the crew at Blood Moon Pictures are no strangers to great anthologies (10/31, Volumes of Blood) and will have their 3rd Volumes of Blood installment Volumes of Blood 3: Devil’s Knight coming soon!
I am forever a fan of what these guys put out because it’s fresh and new, there are no recycled stories to be found and they are clearly having fun working together and putting out quality anthologies. I highly recommend checking out their individual work as well, you may be surprised by the fact that you are probably already familiar with some of them!
For those of you with Amazon Prime, Volumes of Blood:Horror Stories is currently streaming for FREE! It is also available on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, VHX and VUDU for your viewing pleasure…..Basically, there is no excuse to why you can’t watch this movie!
