Lord of Tears (2013) A Beautifully Haunting Gothic Horror Tale-Fitz of Horror
Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) January 8th, 2018
I can’t believe this movie was out for nearly five years before I finally watched it and I also can’t believe that it isn’t talked about more among fans of the horror genre.
Synopsis-Lord of Tears tells the story of James Findlay, a school teacher plagued by recurring nightmares of a mysterious and unsettling entity. Suspecting that his visions are linked to a dark incident in his past, James returns to his childhood home, a notorious mansion in the Scottish Highlands, where he uncovers the disturbing truth behind his dreams, and must fight to survive the brutal consequences of his curiosity.
This kind of movie is the perfect example of why we need to donate to Indigogo and Kickstarter campaigns. This was a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and now is now considered a quasi-classic among those that have seen it.
The word that kept going through my mind when watching Lord of Tears was “Painstaking”. The utmost thought and care went into every shot in this movie and the atmosphere created was superb. I enjoy watching movies where nearly everything in every shot has deeper meaning and a purpose in the film. Director Lawrie Brewster is clearly a gifted director and story teller with an eye for detail.
The pace of Lord of Tears is deliberately slow and methodical but far from boring. The characters all have decent stories that are well told and played out. There were a few shots on Eve (Lexy Hulme) that seemed slightly unnecessary or kind of drug out but when we get further into the story we understand why.
Then there’s The Owl Man, eerily voiced by veteran actor David Schofield. From the moment we see him he is creepy but then he speaks to James (Euan Douglas) telepathically with some seriously cryptic messages and that adds beautifully to the overall creepiness. The Owl Man is a genuinely scary and original antagonist that gives this movie the boost from really good to great.
Lord of Tears is an indie horror film that deserves much more respect and critical acclaim than it gets. In my opinion, it should be mentioned in the same conversation with other great supernatural films like The Sixth Sense and The Others because of its masterful story telling and execution. Like the films I mentioned before, Lord of Tears will stick with you long after the credits role and will beg for multiple viewings.
You can get a very well put together 3 disc Blu ray release of Lord of Tears at the Hex Store were you can also buy digital downloads of their movies for $7.99 and for you physical media junkies like myself, they have 3 collectors editions available with consecutive Roman numerals on the spine in order of release.
