Crazy Lane (2018) – It’s Like Those Mini Candy Bars! – A Fitz of Horror Short Film Review

Bob Coldicott (Gothic Bob) April 30, 2019

Synopsis- Lane moves into a new apartment and has frightening visions of a killer clown in the night. Lane must find answers to these terrifying encounters – is it all in his head? or is it something closer to him than he can possibly imagine?

Short on the heels of Sam Qualiana’s feature-length, goofball horror ‘Post Apocalyptic Command Shark’ comes the appropriately titled ‘Crazy Lane.’ Crazy Lane released on amazon prime just before Halloween 2018…hoping to be a nice, short & free film that would be a perfect treat for the ghoulish holiday. I watched it then, and just now again!

Alain Alvarez (The Legend of Six Fingers) is Lane, our hapless protagonist. He just moved into a new apartment and is dealing with what seems to be a fresh split from his ex, Chrissy who is played by Elizabeth Houlihan (Attack of the Killer Shrews!). To say he can’t get over her would be an understatement and he continually tries to get in contact with her. This, along with adjusting to his new digs, leaves Lane imagining some odd things around his apartment. Lane keeps imagining an evil clown, played by Kyle Haner, taunting him. His landlord and friends are skeptics and convince him he’s just dealing with too much, he’s imagining all of this. After a few nights of weirdness…and having an unwanted guest join him for a movie, Lane finally confronts his “hallucinations”. The result is just as uneasy and unsettling as his unwanted roommate.

At 13 minutes, front to back, Crazy Lane is a fun little movie. You get the sense that this is a pet project for Qualiana but it looks, sounds and flows well. The supporting cast was diverse, character-wise, but Alvarez, Ken Cosentino (who plays Lane’s best friend Justin) and Houlihan really bring it all home. There’s some good laughs, including the evil clown’s…and I am guilty of belting out a big “HA” when I saw Freddy’s (played by Marcus Ganci-Rotella) hair at the BBQ. The short film is a nice little window into veteran indie filmmaker Sam Qualiana’s style of horror and humor. It’s light, witty or comical in spots, deadly when it needs to be and has an odd spin/twist on things. It’s nice to watch something and not know what the outcome will be. Check it out now and make sure you add it to your watch list for a Halloween 2019 treat. Crazy Lane is like one of those mini candy bars. You can never have too much Halloween candy, right?!
