Guillermo Del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – A Fitz of Horror Exclusive Look

“It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time-stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.”
Here in the bowels of Indie Horror, it’s been business as usual, at least in my opinion. The machine hasn’t stopped. Hollywood though, I’m not so sure. Maybe it’s just me but if feels like, outside of Guillermo Del Toro’s typical wheel, it was King’s resurrected ‘IT’ that might’ve sparked ye olde urban legend, psych-horror plug back to mass market life. Opinions on the remake of that aside (I was OK with the result), that makes me happy as pie. Don’t get me wrong, I know stuff has been floating around and coming to the big-landscape but I feel like something is swelling. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark looks to be part of that. The original series consists of 3 children horror books, this seemingly being the first…to screen, at least. It’ll be interesting to see how closely this follows the Alvin Schwartz canon. Adapted for screen by brothers Dan and Kevin Hageman this is being produced by Guillermo del Toro, Sean Daniel, Jason F. Brown, J. Miles Dale and Elizabeth Grave. André Øvredal (Trollhunters, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) is at the helm directing this.
SSTTITD stars Zoe Colletti (Annie, Wildlife and Rubicon), Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn and will be in theatres everywhere on August 9th of this year.
