Volumes of Blood (2015)-A must see horror anthology that definitely brought its “A” game- Fitz of Horror Review

Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) October 15, 2018

Synopsis-Four college friends meet on Halloween night to create their own terrifying urban legend. Before the night is over the terror may become all too real.

This review is long overdue. I have seen this movie 5 times now and it is part of my yearly Halloween horror rotation every year but recently it got a much deserved special limited edition blu ray release, aptly named “Special KILLectors Edition”, from Scream Team Releasing and it is packed with interviews, features and behind the scenes footage creating a very unique insight into the dementedly genius mind of creator/producer P.J. Starks.

Volumes of Blood starts off like a movie that you want to turn off almost instantly but you soon realize that it is intentionally bad/funny because it is a fake movie called “Murder Death Killer 3” (which in hindsight I would love to see get made) being watched by a slacker student in a classroom where the current subject is Urban Legends and fear.

After the rock and roll gory intro we are introduced to our wraparound story where 4 students gathered in the school library are attempting to tell a story so real and so scary that it creates its own urban legend and haunts the campus for years to come-A damn cool premise!

All five stories take place in the very library that they are sitting in, also a nice touch.

“A Little Pick Me Up”– (John Kenneth Muir) A mysterious man offers an energy drink guaranteed to blow their minds to exhausted students as they are doing some late night studying. This is a so-so segment but it is short and gets the ball rolling.

“Ghastly”– (P.J. Starks) A librarian places returned books back on the shelves after the library closes but he is not alone. Shot in Black and White to great effect, this is one of the best segments of the film with some well done and genuinely creepy moments.

“13 after Midnight”– (Jakob Bilinski) Late night studying and pranks don’t mix well in this creature feature segment. It’s a little drawn out but overall one of the better segments.

“Encyclopedia Satanica”– (Nathan Thomas Milliner) A librarian is left alone for the night as a mysterious book , Encyclopedia Satanica, shows up at her desk. Her night is about to take a deadly turn as her past literally comes back to haunt her. Much longer and slower than the other segments, Encyclopedia Satanica is a standout of the film. It is shot amazingly well and intentionally slows down the pace to tell an effectively creepy story.

“That’s A Wrap”-(Lee Vervoort) Producer/creator/director P.J. Starks plays himself as an overbearing, self centered and egotistical director that is sick of his whole film crew and isn’t afraid to let them know in hilariously rude and demeaning fashion. This segment takes the film from good to great as it becomes a quite funny but insanely gory finale with some great kills that will have you hitting the rewind button to see it again.

I’m really surprised more people haven’t heard of this twisted little indie gem. This Special KILLectors edition from Scream Team Releasing is the definitive edition of the film and well worth your hard earned $20 bill.

Also, all proceeds from the purchase of VOB through the Scream Team Releasing website go directly towards Volumes of Blood 3: Devil’s Knight which probably raises the question “Wait, there was a second Volumes of Blood?!” and the answer is “Hell yes! and it was great” (My VOB2 review HERE).
