Welcome to Willits (2017)-Part Alien Movie Part Slasher Movie ALL Crazy!-Fitz of Horror Review

Written by Bryan Fitzgerald (Fitz of Horror) March 5, 2018

I was drawn to this movie because of my addiction to Scream Factory releases, plus I have been on an alien movie kick for about 2 months now so the proverbial planets aligned and I gave Welcome to Willits a shot. Like a demented mix between Spun, BUG, Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, Breaking Bad and a slew of alien invasion flicks, Willits is without a doubt one of the most strangely unique and entertaining movies I’ve seen in a while AND it uses practical alien and gore FX.

Synopsis- Deep in the Northern California woods, in the heart of the notorious Emerald Triangle, lies a remote cabin. The residents struggle to fight off the repeated attacks and abductions by mysterious creatures that have plagued them for years. When a local pot farmer is caught up with a wayward group of campers the situation quickly escalates into total carnage.

Directed by Trevor Ryan and written by Tim Ryan (yes they’re brothers), they clearly had a distinct idea about an original movie and what they delivered was just that. The film plays very tongue in cheek with its humor and the portrayal of the lead stereotypical teen characters and even its more serious main characters have more of a comedic feel given the subject matter and overall premise of the movie.

Lets just get the negative reviews out of the way because this movie is much better and more fun than IMDb (4.4 out of 10) would lead you to believe.

The main character Brock (Bill Sage) is a possibly psychotic pot farmer with a talent for making some high power meth. He also seems to have quite the alien problem on his property. He is on the constant lookout after being abducted a few years back. Clearly Brock is crazy, or is he?

The stereotypical partying stoner teens end up crossing paths with Brock on his protected property and things get crazy. The story lines, gore and drug use are all over the top and add an interesting twist to the overall story.

I personally thought this movie was great. It has a “feel” to it all its own and has fun all along the way. There have been a lot of discussions on whether this movie is a slasher or an alien film and without getting to deep into it so as to not give anything away, I will say it’s a lot of both. So if you are looking for something fun and original then give this one a watch and thank me later.

Also, I highly recommend that you watch their short film in the bonus features called “Welcome to Willits: After Sundown” (2013). It is a more straight forward and serious short film from the Ryan brothers that is the predecessor to the feature length film  and features lots of aliens and excellent practical FX.
