FrankenThug, directed by Richard Tanner (Room for Rent) is one of the most fun indie horror movies I’ve seen in a while. It has the feel of some of the old Troma movies with its tongue and cheek humor, a wild ass premise and a cast of wacky and interesting characters. From seemingly normal people to sadistic bikers and mad hood scientists, FrankenThug covers a wide variety of 80s movie stereotypes with its own very unique style.

Synopsis- THOT’s, Thugs and T.H.C. It’s just another day in the hood; until, a new gang rolls into town and shoots up the wrong G. Now, after a botched science experiment, a FrankenThug has risen to wreak havoc on the gang that killed him and anyone that gets in his way.

FrankenThug opens with a bang as we see our future science experiment gone wrong, “Detroit” (Soze Bagley) gunned down by the new biker gang in town, “Satans Own”. This scene featured some almost purposefully bad CGI gun fire and blood splatter but was very reminiscent of when Murphy got taken out by Red Foreman in the infamous “hand scene” in the original Robocop movie.

Fast forward a few days, Brooklyn (Dante Sellers) gets a frantic call from his friend and resident hood mad scientist, who also happens to be a connoisseur of the finest greenery,  that he has dug up his brother and is going to bring him back from the dead but he needs his help. As Brooklyn heads out to catch the bus across town to help resurrect his murdered brother he meets Kori (Danielle Page) who he hits it off with but doesn’t realize the crowd she runs with and this relationship takes on a very “Romeo & Juliette” forbidden love type of feel later in the film.

As we  are introduced to the “Satans Own” gang of fumbling misfit bikers Led by “Little Dave” (Nathan Hamilton), the over the top Troma-esque humor and tone begin to set in. With fun freeze frame introductions to each member, the style of the movie starts to show.

When Brooklyn arrives at D.O.C.s house the duo begin to conduct the mad scientists very unorthodox experiment by attempting to bring Detroit back from the dead by utilizing some high powered weed. Obviously the experiment worked or we wouldn’t have a damn movie, so when FrankenThug rises from the dead his vocabulary consists of one word- “GUCCI”, and he has an insatiable thirst for malt liquor.

Then FrankenThug has a moment of realization (through weed, death and beer) and he remembers who killed him and busts through a wall and runs wild in the streets searching for the gang members responsible for taking his life. Now it’s up to Brooklyn and D.O.C. to find FrankenThug and bring him home before shit gets out of hand…….Guess what? Shit gets out of hand!

When FrankenThug starts taking out the bikers one by one the war begins and the bikers decide to call on a very unexpected source to take out FrankenThug for good. The results are a hilarious if not somewhat confusing conclusion that will leave you hoping for a sequel or three!

FrankenThug is consciously aware that it is low budget and cheesy and it embraces this fact resulting in an indie urban horror movie that will be shown at parties and watched and loved by drunk and high people for years to come!

Overall FrankenThug is a well done microbudget indie horror movie that is gloriously brought to life by is cast of likeable characters, dark humor and fresh urban twist on the age old Frankenstein tale. It also features a killer rap soundtrack and some great original music from Dale Jepson and the Nighthawk(s). The intermission at the half point of the movie featuring Son of Celluloid was a great touch as well. So if you’re looking for something that is just purely a fun watch-twist one up, crack the 40 and kick back while giving FrankenThug a spin.
